Balochistan’s renowned folk singer Mai Sobhayi Bugti was shot dead by unidentified armed men in Dera Bugti, police said.
According to police, armed men riding motorcycles opened fire on the singer on the outskirts of Dera Bugti before fleeing the scene.
Mai Sobhayi sustained multiple gunshot wounds and died on the spot.
Police registered a case against unidentified attackers and shifted her body to hospital for medico-legal formalities.
The police said the motive behind the killing has not yet been established. Police are investigating the case from different angles and conducting raids to trace the suspects.
A senior police officer said investigators were working to identify those responsible for the killing and to determine the circumstances and motive behind the attack.
Mai Sobhai was associated with local folk music. She was also described as the first female singer from the Dera Bugti tribe to pursue singing professionally.
Through her voice and music, she helped bring local folk music to wider attention.
