Restaurants near the public sit-out area at F-10 Markaz Islamabad will be allowed to use the space in front of their outlets for temporary seating for two weeks.
The Metropolitan Corporation Islamabad (MCI) announced the decision on Thursday. It said that the seating will only be allowed if it does not block pedestrians, public access or emergency routes.
The decision was made during a meeting between MCI officials and representatives of restaurant owners and their union.
The meeting discussed the proposed Open Space Policy for 2026-27. MCI Chief Officer Dr Anam Fatima chaired the meeting.
What are the rules for restaurant owners?
According to the MCI, restaurants that want to continue using the space after two weeks will need to get a licence.
They will also have to follow the official rules for open-space and outdoor seating. The MCI said public spaces must remain open for everyone.
Restaurants and other businesses will not be allowed to place stalls, counters or displays that block walkways, parking areas or public access.
Existing green areas and street furniture will also be protected in Islamabad.
Businesses that have occupied or changed approved green or open spaces may be asked to return them to their original condition.
The proposed policy aims to control the use of public spaces by businesses. It also focuses on pedestrian movement, parking, traffic flow and the protection of public facilities.

During the meeting, Dr Anam Fatima asked the Directorate of Municipal Administration to continue moving municipal services to digital systems.
Applications for licences, permissions and other services will be submitted through the designated online NITB portal.
The participants agreed that commercial activity should be allowed in public spaces under proper rules.
They also stressed the need to protect public areas and make sure that there is easy access for citizens.
