The Sindh government has directed all universities in the province to install CCTV cameras to help prevent harassment incidents on campuses.
Speaking during a session of the Sindh Assembly, Minister for Universities and Boards Muhammad Ismail Rahoo said universities already have complaint cells to deal with harassment cases.
Rahoo said unfortunate harassment incidents do occur at universities. He explained that such complaints are initially investigated by the concerned university. If parents are not satisfied with the university’s findings, the relevant department can also conduct an investigation.
He said all universities had been instructed to install CCTV cameras as part of measures to improve campus safety.
Rahoo also shared details about university transport, saying 30 universities across Sindh have a total of 767 buses and coasters. Public-sector universities own 448 of these vehicles, according to his statement.
He said the University of Karachi has around 44,000 students but has relatively few buses to meet their transport needs. He added that the Sindh government provides the university with its largest grant.
The minister also told the assembly that 112,198 scholarships were awarded to students between 2020 and 2025.
He said the Higher Education Commission decides matters related to universities, while each university has its own criteria for determining scholarship amounts.
