The Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) has fined Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) more than Rs10 million over delays in delivering passengers’ baggage.

The fines were imposed after passengers complained about delays in receiving their luggage after landing. The PAA directed PIA to pay the fines by September 25, but the airline failed to pay them by the deadline.

The airline was fined more than Rs7 million at Islamabad Airport, while a separate fine of Rs1.485 million was imposed at Lahore Airport.

The airline has also received warnings over passenger service issues, including delays in baggage handling.

PIA officials said the delays were partly caused by limited facilities at airports. GM Traffic Tariq Majeed said Islamabad Airport does not have enough conveyor belts and scanners, which can slow down baggage delivery.

He added that delays become worse when several flights arrive at the same time.

PIA spokesperson Abdullah Khan said limited operational capacity at airports affects baggage delivery. He said such fines are part of routine procedures and that other airlines also face similar penalties.

It is now owned and managed by the Arif Habib Consortium, which acquired a 75 per cent majority stake in the national carrier.
