Karachi University Road commuters may finally get relief, as Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said that most of the long-delayed roadwork had been completed and the remaining section was expected to be finished within about a month.
Memon made the remarks after inaugurating the Mosamiyat Flyover, a key component of the Red Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project. Sindh Minister Saeed Ghani and Karachi Deputy Mayor Salman Abdullah Murad were also present at the inauguration.
The senior minister said the difficulties faced by commuters on Karachi University Road were now largely over, while work on the remaining portion was continuing.
2.7km section of Karachi University Road remains under construction
According to Memon, around 2.7 kilometres of University Road is still under construction because K-IV augmentation pipelines are being laid along the route.
He said the remaining work would take approximately another month to complete.
A mixed-traffic lane has already been constructed, while the Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) is carrying out roadwork on the unfinished section.
The latest timeline comes after earlier government commitments to make University Road fully motorable by September 15. The road had previously been expected to reopen completely by the end of July.
Mosamiyat Flyover expected to ease traffic
The newly inaugurated Mosamiyat Flyover is an important part of the Red Line BRT corridor and is expected to improve traffic movement on one of Karachi’s busiest routes.
Memon said the flyover would soon be opened for public traffic after completion of the necessary formalities.
He also said work on Red Line BRT stations and other infrastructure was continuing.
University Road construction caused major traffic problems
Karachi University Road has remained heavily congested during the construction of the Red Line BRT project.
Narrow lanes, diversions, construction machinery and ongoing infrastructure work have caused lengthy delays for motorists and public transport users.
Memon acknowledged the delays and apologised to Karachi residents, saying rising costs of cement, fuel and other construction inputs, along with currency depreciation, had affected the pace of work.
He said the provincial government was working continuously on development projects across Karachi.
When will Karachi University Road be completed?
Memon said the remaining 2.7km section of Karachi University Road is expected to take about another month to complete.
The completion of this section will be important for restoring normal traffic flow along the corridor, which connects major residential, educational and commercial areas of Karachi.
For daily commuters, the opening of the Mosamiyat Flyover could provide some immediate relief, while the completion of the remaining roadwork is expected to bring further improvement in traffic movement.
