Why have hidden car door handles been banned?

As safety risk concerns rise across the world, the hidden car door handles have been banned and they will phase out from 2027.

According to Reuters, China will become the first country to phase out a design of hidden car door handles pioneered by Tesla and adopted by Chinese competitors, including Xiaomi.

The hidden car door handles design, which functions through a key fob or mobile phone or by manually pressing it, has drawn scrutiny in both the United States and China over potential safety risks.

Last year, the US. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened a defect probe into the Tesla Model 3 sedan’s emergency door release controls. Tesla, which did not comment on the investigation at the time, did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Tuesday.

China’s industry ministry said on Monday that under its new safety technical requirements, there will be no hidden car door handles and every car door should be equipped with both exterior and interior handles.

Mechanical release designs will be mandatory, with innovations such as electrical handles optional.

New car policy

China’s new policy sets out rules for where handles must be located on the outside of a car and how they should function to ensure that they can be opened in the event of an accident. It also requires interior handles to be clearly visible.

New vehicle models must align their door handle design with the new regulation from January 1, 2027 while approved models will come under the rules by January 1, 2029, the ministry said.

Cheapest cars to buy in Pakistan under Rs1 million in 2026

Buying a car in Pakistan in 2026 with a budget of under Rs1 million is not easy. Many options in this price range are old, heavily used, or come with hidden problems such as rust or worn-out engines. For most buyers, the search can feel confusing and risky.

Still, with patience and careful checking, there are used cars in the market that can serve as reliable daily drivers and get you from one place to another without constant trouble.

With new car prices now far beyond the reach of most people, the used car market remains the only realistic choice for buyers on a tight budget. Prices have climbed dramatically over the past five to six years, shrinking the options available under Rs1 million. Yet a few familiar models continue to stand out.
