Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai has announced a scholarship for Pakistani female students. In a video message that she shared on social media, she said that she is motivated to support girls in the pursuit of higher education.
Malala explained that following her graduation from the University of Oxford she wanted to create opportunities for young women striving to achieve education and social change.
The scholarship is pursuing to aid Pakistani women to carry out a master’s degree at Oxford University.
Focus on Change-Makers
The program is focused on women committed to creating positive change in Pakistan through education.
Malala emphasized that this scholarship is for people who have dreams of wanting to study in Oxford and bringing back to their communities.
She motivated aspiring students to take up this opportunity in order to realise both personal and societal ambitions.
Oxford Honours Malala
In a separate recognition, Malala was given a special honour for her time at the University of Oxford by Lady Margaret Hall (LMH) college. On February 6, a portrait of her, painted by London based artist Isabella Watling was unveiled at the college.
The painting comes almost 6 years post Malala graduating, and 12 years after she became the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize and the first female Pakistani ever to receive the prestigious award.
Portrait Brings out Strength and Membership
During The Founders and Benefactors Dinner, Malala said she hopes that the honour “helps open doors for many others” and is a reminder to everyone, girls from rural areas, such as Swat Valley, also have their place in prestigious institutions.
Artist Isabella Watling said she had it as a challenging but rewarding project. She wanted to define Malala’s strength and grace.
A Message of Hope
Both having a scholarship and having this portrait indicates Malala’s long-lasting commitment to, ‘girls’ education.’
Through these initiatives she continues to inspire Pakistani women and girls from all over the world towards knowledge, leadership and social change.
