Pakistan heatwave

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted the warmer than normal summer season to start in spring at the scale nation wide and there are chances that heatwave conditions may start building up in the next few weeks especially the southern part of plain area of Punjab and Sindh Province.

According to March, April, May seasonal outlook released by the department, it is more likely that these average temperatures will stay above normal across the vast majority of Pakistan. Northern regions including Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir and upper areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are likely to be the most serious regions in respect to decreases in temperature compared to the seasonal average.

PMD estimates that rainfall during the season will be close to normal on a total basis with a few areas potentially going slightly higher. Southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, some parts of central Punjab and north Balochistan are likely to experience reasonably strong spring rainfall activity

Meanwhile, Sindh, central and southern Balochistan, northern KP, Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan are expected to get toward their usual seasonal rainfall.

The meteorological authority has also identified a number of possible impacts that are expected in the coming weeks. Changing temperature patterns may lead to dust storms, gusty winds and some hail storms in the spring months. Major cities including Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Lahore could witness early release of pollen and insignificantly the rainfall after mid March prolonged the pollen relative allergies.

Agricultural experts have also been advised to stay vigilant as warmer weather may speed the activity of pests and disease in Rabi crops that need to be monitored and managed in time.

Additionally PMD warned that increase in temperature in Gilgit-Baltistan and upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa may expedite the snowmelt which increase the possibility of snowmelt related hazards later in the season.

The department said the seasonal outlook only gives general climate trends which should be used in conjunction with short-term weather forecasts in planning and preparedness for day-to-day activity.
