KP weather, temperature amid extreme heat today

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a heatwave advisory, warning that temperatures in the plains of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are likely to rise sharply from May 8 to 10.

According to the advisory, daytime temperatures in Dera Ismail Khan, Tank, Bannu, Karak and Lakki Marwat may surge between 43°C and 47°C.

The PDMA said temperatures in Peshawar, Nowshera, Charsadda, Mardan, Swabi, Haripur and Kohat are expected to remain between 39°C and 43°C, while severe heat is likely to persist across southern and central districts of the province.

The authority has alerted all district administrations to take precautionary measures and directed relevant departments to establish heatstroke centres, cooling points and mobile cooling units. Rescue 1122 and fire brigade teams have also been instructed to remain prepared for any emergency.

Hospitals have been directed to ensure the availability of medical staff and facilities during the heatwave. The PDMA warned that intense heat could also trigger dust storms and strong winds, urging citizens to adopt safety precautions.

The advisory further warned of increased risks of heatstroke, pressure on water resources and faster snowmelt in upper regions due to rising temperatures.

Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary exposure to sunlight, increase water intake and take extra care of children and elderly people, especially between 10am and 5pm.

Farmers have also been urged to exercise caution during crop harvesting and ensure proper care of livestock. The PDMA said all relevant institutions have been instructed to launch public awareness campaigns regarding the heatwave.

The PDMA Emergency Operation Centre remains fully operational, and citizens have been advised to report any untoward incident through the helpline 1700.

Advisory issued ahead of possible heatwave in Islamabad

The District Health Office, Islamabad, yesterday released a public advisory warning of a possible heatwave during the upcoming summer period.

Citizens are being urged to take precautionary steps to protect themselves from extreme temperatures and reduce health risks linked to heat exposure.

According to the advisory, heat-related illnesses can escalate quickly if preventive measures are ignored. Individuals exposed to extreme heat for extended periods may experience symptoms such as dehydration, dizziness, fatigue, headaches, and in severe cases, heat stroke, which can become life-threatening.

Citizens have been strongly advised to limit outdoor activities during peak daytime hours and avoid direct sunlight unless necessary. Staying hydrated is a key protective step, along with wearing light and loose clothing to reduce body heat.

The advisory also stresses the importance of taking extra care of children, elderly individuals, and outdoor workers who are more vulnerable to heat-related complications. People are encouraged to stay in shaded or cool environments and ensure proper ventilation at home.
