A court in Karachi has ordered K-Electric to pay Rs 13.5 million (Rs 1.35 crore) in compensation to the family of a man who died from an electric shock.

While giving the judgment, the senior civil judge said electricity supply companies carry an extraordinary responsibility to ensure public safety.

The court stated that it is K-Electric’s responsibility to make the power distribution system and public spaces safe, adding that the presence of electric current in a public utility pole itself amounts to negligence.

The court has also ordered the electric company to pay the family of the deceased within 90 days.

It is pertinent to mention that, according to reports, the man passed away in 2019. It took the family seven years to secure compensation.

The man died after being electrocuted during rainfall. Despite complaints from local residents to K-Electric about the electricity pole, no action was taken.

Recently, a student was electrocuted at her school in Shakargarh Punjab.

She had gone to drink water when she fainted after being electrocuted by an electric wire. She was shifted to a hospital but lost her life.

The school was reportedly sealed due to incompetence of its administration.

According to Narowal Deputy Commissioner, the parents of the deceased did not want to take legal action against the school administration, however, he added that the education department would register an FIR against the school principal.
