Srinagar Highway at Chungi No 26 has been blocked from both sides for traffic posing great problems for the commuters, who have been stuck in traffic for the past several hours.
The road closure on Tuesday was triggered due to the movement of the convoy of Chief Minister (CM) of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP)Sohail Afridi, who remained adamant to pass through the city on route to Adiala Jail.
Traffic from the Motorway towards Islamabad remained stuck for hours, with queues stretching up to 10 kilometres. Commuters reported complete breakdown of flow at multiple points.
The Chief Minister insisted on using GT Road to reach Adiala Jail. Islamabad Police maintained that the convoy should use the Chakri Interchange route, which directly connects to Adiala Jail.
Sources said the disagreement delayed movement and worsened the traffic situation on surrounding roads in the intense heat.
Meanwhile, congestion on the Motorway side intensified. Thousands of vehicles were stranded, with ambulances also caught in the jam, causing distress among passengers.
Eyewitnesses said the traffic system collapsed under pressure. Long queues of cars remained stationary for hours, especially on entry routes to Islamabad.
Traffic police diverted vehicles to alternative routes, but long queues were seen on connecting roads. Office workers and daily commuters faced delays for several hours.
Public transport also remained stuck in multiple points along the highway adding to confusion on the roads.
