After a last-minute government move, a ‘Donald Trump‘ lookalike buffalo has been saved from being sacrificed during Eid-ul-Azha for its white tuft of hair, which the animal is blessed with.
Authorities intervened, saying they were worried about security and the large number of people watching the animal before Eid celebrations, as the buffalo, which weighed almost 700kg, had already been sold for religious slaughter.
The Home Minister of Bangladesh, Salahuddin Ahmed, directed the officials to cease the sacrifice, return the buffalo to the buyer and deliver it to the national zoo in Dhaka.
The Home Ministry official said it was taken at the last moment because of the unprecedented public interest garnered by the buffalo.
The animal has gone viral on social media, making it an internet sensation.
The buffalo’s unusual look and its blond fringe attracted crowds of people; it became a national attraction.
The name was given by the seller’s younger brother who spotted the resemblance with the former US President, Donald Trump, who has a similar hairstyle, said owner of the farm Ziauddin Mridha.
The term soon became popular online and contributed to the popularity of the animal among the public.
The buffalo is gentle, and needs special care, frequent feeding and regular baths, Mridha said.
Albino buffaloes are very rare in Bangladesh, as most cattle have dark colour during the busy livestock season of Eid.
Thousands of animals are sacrificed during Eid-ul-Azha every year, but the buffalo’s extraordinary appearance and viral fame saved it from being sacrificed.
