Older iPhones will need software update to keep running WhatsApp

Some older iPhone models will require a software update to continue using WhatsApp after the end of November 2026, as Meta has announced an increase in the app’s minimum system requirements.

Starting November 30, WhatsApp will need iOS 15.5 or newer, up from the current iOS 15.1 requirement.

The affected models include the iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone SE (1st generation), iPhone 7, and iPhone 7 Plus.

The last update these models can receive is iOS 15.8.8, so users should ensure their devices are updated before the deadline.

It’s important to note that no iPhone is being completely removed from support. Any model that can run iOS 15.1 can also be upgraded to 15.5, so simply going to Settings ➝ General ➝ Software Update will keep them compatible.

Meta reviews the supported operating systems annually, dropping those with the fewest users and those least likely to receive current security updates. Users on an affected version will receive notifications within WhatsApp, reminding them to upgrade before support ends.

Users with an iPhone 8, iPhone X, or any newer model should not be concerned.

These devices can run software versions beyond the new minimum requirement and are expected to remain compatible with WhatsApp after the November deadline.

In June 2025, WhatsApp discontinued support for the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus, as these devices could not be updated beyond iOS 15.0. Users affected by that change were left with web.whatsapp.com as their only option.

Apple prepares to launch iOS 27

Apple is now preparing its new mobile operating system, iOS 27. Many changes and upgrades are expected in the new system.

Early reports suggest that the update will focus on improving performance, battery efficiency, and deeper integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in the system.

The company is also expected to make the system faster, smoother, and more stable, instead of a major design overhaul.

Sources say that one of the biggest upgrades in iOS 27 is expected to be a new version of Siri powered by advanced generative AI.
