A sudden earthquake jolted the federal capital, Islamabad, along with nearby areas, sending tremors through the region and causing panic among residents. According to a private news channel, the tremors were also felt in Rawalpindi, Attock, and Chakwal.
Earthquake tremors were felt in Peshawar, Swat, Kohat, Lower Dir, and surrounding areas, including Shangla, Bisham, Chitral, and Bajaur. Tremors were also reported in Mardan, South Waziristan, and Dera Ismail Khan.
Meanwhile, strong tremors were felt in the federal capital and several cities of Punjab, prompting members of the assembly to leave their seats and move outside. According to the Seismological Centre, the earthquake measured 5.7 in magnitude with a depth of 191 kilometres.
According to a PDMA spokesperson, the epicentre of the earthquake was located in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan.
The DG PDMA stated that the relevant administration is currently inspecting buildings, while the PDMA provincial control room and district emergency operation centres across Punjab remain active 24/7.
People came out of their homes and buildings in fear after feeling the earthquake tremors. The exact intensity of the earthquake is still being determined, and rescue agencies have also been put on alert.
Meanwhile, earthquake tremors were also felt in the border areas of Afghanistan, where the magnitude was recorded at 6 on the Richter scale. The epicentre was located in the Hindu Kush mountain range. The tremors were also felt in the capital city, Kabul.
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly session was adjourned for five minutes due to the earthquake. It is worth mentioning here that three earthquake tremors were felt intermittently in different areas of Balochistan yesterday.
