OxfordAQA announces assessment improvements including earlier exam results

OxfordAQA, a collaboration between Oxford University Press and the department of Oxford University, also the largest provider of GCSEs and A level in the United Kingdom (UK), has released a series of significant enhancements, including the provision of earlier exam results.

The initiative introduces three series of annual examinations and two opportunities for submitting International EPQ submission points, as stated in a press release.

These improvements will be implemented between 2026 and 2029, offering increased choice and improved flexibility for planning university admissions and academic advancement.

A level and GCSEs to get earlier exam results in 2027

The changes include earlier May and June exam results starting from July 2027.

In 2027, the exam results day for International AS and A level will be on 28 July, while International GCSEs results will be available on 4 August.

They also include an additional exam series such as an October/November series for all International AS/A-level subjects beginning in 2028, along with a January International AS/A-level series for key subjects starting in 2029 (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths, Further Maths, Economics).

Biannual International EPQ submission points, commencing in May 2026, will provide students with greater control to develop, refine, and finalise their projects.

In light of the assessment improvements, Managing Director of OxfordAQA, Andrew Coombe has said: “At OxfordAQA, we are dedicated to enhancing the effectiveness of international exams for all stakeholders.”

“These improvements are a direct response to the feedback we have received from schools regarding their needs. By providing earlier results, expanding the exam series, and offering greater flexibility for the International EPQ, we are enabling schools to align assessments with their teaching programs and creating more opportunities for student success.”, he added further.

The earlier release of May/June results is expected to provide International AS and A-Level students with additional time and options when navigating global university admissions.

It will also assist International GCSE learners in planning their next few steps, whether that involves further study or new programs.

The expansion of exam series is further aimed at benefiting schools operating under diverse academic frameworks.
