As temperatures continue to rise, many people try to save money by buying used or low-cost air conditioners. While this may reduce upfront costs, experts warn that ageing AC units can develop faults that pose serious safety risks if left unchecked.
According to experts, problems such as worn electrical wiring, damaged components, faulty motors and overheating are common in older air conditioners. Although these issues may seem minor at first, they can eventually lead to short circuits, electrical fires or costly repairs.
One of the clearest warning signs is a burning smell when the air conditioner is switched on. If the unit gives off an odour similar to burnt wires or melted plastic, it should be turned off immediately. Experts say this could indicate damaged internal wiring, a failing motor or deteriorating insulation, all of which increase the risk of fire. The unit should be inspected by a qualified technician without delay.
Unusual noises are another sign that something may be wrong. Rattling, grinding or other unexpected sounds could point to problems with the fan, compressor or loose internal parts. Ignoring these noises may lead to more extensive damage to the system.

Another serious warning sign is visible sparking near the voltage stabiliser or electrical wiring connected to the air conditioner. According to experts, sparks may indicate faulty wiring or loose electrical connections that can become a fire hazard if not repaired promptly.
Experts recommend switching off the air conditioner immediately if any of these warning signs appear and arranging a full inspection by a qualified technician. Timely repairs can prevent further damage to the appliance while also protecting your home and family from potential accidents.
They also advise that if an air conditioner repeatedly breaks down and requires frequent repairs, replacing it with a newer, safer and more energy-efficient model may be a more practical and cost-effective decision in the long run.
