Pakistan’s star javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem has secured a place in the men’s javelin final at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. No athlete managed to achieve the automatic qualification mark of 84 metres during the three-attempt qualifying round, with the finalists determined by their best throws.
As a result, the top 12 athletes advanced to the final based on their best throws. Arshad Nadeem secured seventh place in the qualifying round with a best throw of 78.63 metres. Pakistan’s Yasir Sultan failed to qualify for the final, finishing 14th with a throw of 74.36 metres.
Among the other finalists, the Bahamas’ Keshav qualified with a throw of 78.60 metres, while India’s Rohit Yadav (78.37 metres) and Yashvir Singh (78.36 metres) also advanced.
Trinidad and Tobago’s Keshorn Walcott qualified for the final with a throw of 78.26 metres, while Nigeria’s Nnamdi advanced with a best effort of 75.27 metres.
Sri Lanka’s Ramesh Tharanga emerged as the top performer in the men’s javelin qualification round, registering a best throw of 82.84 metres. Grenada’s Anderson Peters secured second place with 81.29 metres, while South Africa’s Douw Smit finished third after throwing 80.64 metres.
England’s Ben East claimed fourth spot with an effort of 80.38 metres, followed by India’s Neeraj Chopra, who qualified in fifth place with a throw of 79.61 metres. Australia’s Cameron MacEntyre advanced in sixth with 78.91 metres, while Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem secured seventh place with a best throw of 78.63 metres to book his place in the final.
Pakistan’s Yasir Sultan narrowly missed out on qualification, finishing 14th overall with a best throw of 74.36 metres.
Arshad will enter the final as the defending Commonwealth Games champion. At the 2022 edition, he produced a record-breaking throw of 90.18 metres to win Pakistan’s first-ever Commonwealth Games gold medal in men’s javelin. The historic effort set new Commonwealth Games and national records, while also making him the first South Asian athlete to breach the 90-metre mark in the event.
