Ben Gannon-Doak on the rise as Scotland’s key player amid FIFA World Cup 2026

Ben Gannon-Doak stood out as Scotland’s top player in their first men’s World Cup match in 28 years, securing a tough victory over Haiti.

His genuine and passionate display energised the Tartan Army fans in the Boston Stadium, who were nervous about the start of the tournament against Haiti.

It is important to note that Scott McTominay returned from a stomach illness to play in Scotland’s first World Cup game in nearly three decades.

John McGinn, who would go on to score the winning goal, also started. Lawrence Shankland, known for his scoring ability, led the attack.

However, the spotlight was on a 20-year-old who wasn’t even born when Scotland last appeared on this grand stage.

It quickly became clear against Haiti that Gannon-Doak would be central to any action.

Ben Gannon-Doak kept his play straightforward, looking to attack whenever he received the ball on the right side. This was a welcome sight for Scotland fans, given its rarity in recent times.

When McTominay hit the post, it was following another impressive run from Gannon-Doak. Shortly after, he assisted Che Adams, whose shot was deflected right to McGinn, who celebrated joyfully as Scotland scored their first World Cup goal since 1998.

Despite the presence of seasoned players like Scott McTominay, John McGinn, and Lawrence Shankland in Steve Clarke’s lineup, Gannon-Doak was the one who captured everyone’s attention.

Gannon-Doak’s journey hasn’t been easy, as injuries kept him from participating in Euro 2024 after he was initially named in Clarke’s squad two years ago.

“The Euros probably came a bit too early, but I don’t think I would have played if I was there,” he shared with Sky Sports recently.

Earlier this year, the young player also discussed how he found his faith again during tough times away from the game.
