The Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) has removed more than 2.25 million beneficiaries from its records and stopped payments to over 800,000 others.
The Ministry of Poverty Alleviation and Social Safety Division said 2,259,404 beneficiaries were removed between July 1, 2025, and June 30, 2026.
The details were shared in the National Assembly on Friday. Payments to more than 800,000 other beneficiaries were also suspended, according to the information presented to the assembly.

How much money has BISP recovered?

An audit report found that 140,488 government employees and their family members were receiving BISP assistance during 2019-20.
The report also showed that more than Rs712 million had been recovered from fake and ineligible beneficiaries.
Of this amount, over Rs545 million was recovered through the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA). More than Rs21 million was also recovered from BISP employees.
The ministry further reported receiving 55,579 complaints during the previous financial year.
These complaints involved unauthorised deductions from payments, embezzlement and the misuse of funds.
The ministry said investigations were underway and action was being taken under the law.

BISP introduces easier payment system

Changes have been introduced to make BISP payments easier for beneficiaries. The new system is expected to help eligible women receive their money without deductions.
Additional Secretary BISP Dr Ismat Nawaz said payments would continue through authorised agents of partner banks.
She explained that bank branches are not available in every area of the country. This makes agents important for delivering payments.

How will the new payment system work?

Dr Ismat Nawaz said banks would be responsible for their payment services. Agents would be answerable to their respective banks.
Under the new system, beneficiaries will be able to collect their payments from any bank. They will also have more freedom to choose when they collect their money.
