The Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) has registered a First Information Report (FIR) against the Member of Provincial Assembly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Shakeel Khan, who belongs to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI).
As per the FIR, Shakeel Khan and his goons were actively involved in a firing incident that took place in Malakand earlier.
Two personnel of the Pakistan Levies were severely injured due to direct firing by the guards of the KP MPA.
The case was registered after Khan’s security guards allegedly opened fire on Levies personnel.
According to media reports, Shakeel Khan was present at the scene when the firing took place.
Videos went viral at the social media showing members of his security detail firing weapons have also circulated on social media.
Authorities have taken notice of the incident and initiated legal proceedings against those named in the case.
The authorities have also added that arrests have been made in connection with the incident.
The development comes amid heightened political tensions ahead of PTI’s planned protest in Islamabad on 27 September.
PTI KP president Junaid Akbar has said that party supporters would approach Islamabad through multiple routes. In a speech to supporters, he also used the phrase that PTI would “turn Islamabad into Somnath”, referring to the party’s planned mobilisation.
The authorities have said that strict action will be taken over the Malakand firing, while the legal proceedings against Khan and the other people named in the FIR are continuing. The allegations against the accused have not, however, been established in court.
Government sources said there would be no leniency for those found responsible and that strict action would be taken under a zero-tolerance policy.
The incident has also drawn political criticism, with opposition figures accusing PTI leaders of escalating tensions and contributing to political instability.
PTI has not, however, been established by these allegations to have been responsible for the incident.
