The Karachi Traffic Police have declared that an e-challan system targeting lane violations on Shahrah-e-Faisal will be implemented starting June 1.
A representative from the traffic police stated that drivers who do not follow lane discipline will receive e-challans.
The traffic police have urged the public to observe lane discipline while operating their vehicles.
Fines have been established based on vehicle type, with motorbikes and rickshaws facing penalties of Rs2,500 and buses would be issued fines of Rs7,500 for violations.
“All vehicles must stay within their assigned lanes,” the representative commented, emphasising that motorcycles, buses, and cars are also required to follow lane regulations.
As part of the initiative, motorbikes, buses, rickshaws, and other light transport vehicles, including Mazdas, will be allowed to use the two leftmost lanes.
DIG Traffic Peer Muhammad Shah indicated that the remaining lanes, which will vary between two and three depending on the section, will be set aside for faster-moving vehicles, such as cars and double-cabin trucks.
In view of the new system, the Chief Traffic Officer noted that enforcement will be supported by the current camera system, which will automatically issue e-tickets to offenders.
E-challans to be issued on roads with signage
The development comes after Karachi Traffic Police, in February, informed the Sindh High Court that the e-challan system had only been implemented in areas of the city where the road infrastructure, lane markings, and signage were fully functional.
Additionally, it was stated that the roads currently under construction were excluded from the e-ticketing system until the development work and the installation or upgrading of road infrastructure were completed.
