Actress Hayden Panettiere has died at the age of 36. Her representative confirmed the news, leaving fans around the world in shock. The circumstances surrounding her passing remain unknown. ABC was the first outlet to report the tragic news.
Her father, Skip Panettiere, shared a heartfelt statement. “It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden,” he said. He called her “an incredible light and a force of nature.” He added that she brought love and joy to everyone who knew her and to millions who watched her onscreen.
A career that touched millions
Panettiere became a household name through television and film. She starred in the hit series “Heroes” as Claire Bennet, a self-healing cheerleader. She also played country music star Juliette Barnes in “Nashville.”
Her film work was just as memorable. She appeared in “Scream 4” as Kirby Reed in 2011. She later returned to the horror franchise for its sixth installment. Fans also remember her roles in “Remember the Titans” and “I Love You Beth Cooper.”
Honest about her struggles
Hayden Panettiere spoke openly about her personal battles. She released a candid memoir this year titled “This Is Me: A Reckoning.” The book reflected on her life as a child star. It also covered her fight with addiction, postpartum depression, recovery, and domestic abuse.
“I could relate to a lot of those storylines like the alcoholism and postpartum depression,” she told People in 2022. At one point, she was hospitalized with jaundice. Doctors warned her that her liver was “going to give out.”
Her family and loss
Panettiere shared an 11-year-old daughter, Kaya, with her ex, Wladimir Klitschko. He is a Ukrainian former professional boxer. In 2018, she gave up custody of Kaya while struggling with substance misuse.
“It was the hardest thing I could do,” she recalled. She said letting go was the best choice for her daughter. She also mourned her brother, Jansen Panettiere, a voice actor who died in 2023 at age 28. “There was nothing in my life that feels like losing my other half,” she said.

Beyond acting, Hayden Panettiere championed many causes. She supported mental health awareness, animal rights, and environmental issues. She also backed DC voting rights and statehood. Officials proclaimed “Hayden Panettiere Day” on Sept. 16, 2011.
