The government of Sindh has decreased the price of flour across the province.
The government took this major action after concerns over rising costs and an alleged artificial shortage of wheat.
The decision was taken during a provincial cabinet meeting chaired by the Sindh Chief Minister (CM) Syed Murad Ali Shah, where officials reviewed wheat reserves, the proposed National Wheat Policy 2026-2030 and reforms in the Food Department.
Officials told the meeting that Sindh is expected to face a wheat shortage of 1.59 million tonnes during the 2026-27 financial year. They also said wheat prices in the open market had risen above the government’s support price of Rs3,500 per 40kg.
Taking notice of the increase in flour prices, Murad Ali Shah directed authorities to take action against traders and hoarders accused of creating an artificial shortage of wheat.
He said wheat hoarding would not be tolerated and instructed officials to ensure a stable supply of flour in the public interest.
The chief minister also ordered the Food Department to modernise its operations by digitising the procurement, storage and distribution of wheat.
He said greater use of technology and increased private sector participation would help improve the system.
The provincial cabinet approved plans to introduce an Integrated Weight Management System in the Food Department as part of wider digital reforms. The proposal will be reviewed further by the Sindh Information Technology Company (SITC) before implementation.
The meeting also reviewed the federal government’s proposed National Wheat Policy. A high-level cabinet committee has been formed to examine the draft policy and submit recommendations to the provincial government within a specified timeframe.
The Sindh government said the measures are intended to improve wheat management, curb hoarding and help bring flour prices under control across the province.
