French President urges 'Israel out of Lebanese territory'

French President Emmanuel Macron has urged Israel to renounce its territorial ambitions, suggesting that a political resolution is the sole avenue to enduring peace while hosting Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam at the Elysee Palace.

During a joint press conference, Macron stated that Israel needs to withdraw from Lebanese territory and abandon any territorial claims, stating that the existing ceasefire is vulnerable.

He asserted that the only way to achieve peace is through a political agreement between Israel and Lebanon that ensures the security of both nations and the territorial integrity of Lebanon.

Macron also recognised what he termed a legitimate question regarding whether the EU should suspend its association agreement with Israel if it continues this policy which contradicts its history, especially concerning Lebanon.

However, he advised against immediate escalation, commenting that just a few days after Israel agreed to a ceasefire for Lebanon and engaged in discussions, is not the appropriate moment to rush into a confrontation.

French President says France will commit to rebuilding Lebanon

The French president also mentioned that reinforcing the fragile ceasefire is a priority, warning that the truce “will not be resolved in a few hours or a few days” and necessitates ongoing diplomatic efforts.

Macron affirmed France’s ongoing support, stating that France will commit to the reconstruction of Lebanon. He further noted that Paris is prepared to uphold its commitment on the ground even after the expiration of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) mandate at the conclusion of 2026.

For his part, Lebanese PM reiterated Lebanon’s call for the total withdrawal of Israeli forces, along with the return of prisoners and displaced individuals, as part of the ongoing negotiations.

In addressing internal dynamics, Macron stated that Hezbollah must be disarmed “by the Lebanese themselves.”

He further warned against renewed regional escalation, advocating for measures to prevent a return to hostilities as a temporary truce between the US and Iran approaches its conclusion.

“We believe in international law,” Macron stated, urging that time be set aside for diplomatic efforts.
