Water levels flow in the Indus River are rising sharply due to heavy rains. An increase of 45,000 cusecs recorded at Guddu Barrage over the past 24 hours. This shows that certain areas along the river in Sindh could see low-flood conditions in the days ahead.
According to the report by control room at Sukkur Barrage, the Indus River is expected to reach low-flood levels at Guddu Barrage within the next 48 hours, once water from the Punjnad and Taunsa areas arrives at the barrage.
Current water levels
The water levels are currently expected to keep changing over the next one to two days as flows move downstream.
- Guddu Barrage: Inflow of 217,045 cusecs, outflow of 182,185 cusecs
- Sukkur Barrage: Inflow of 126,380 cusecs, outflow of 71,660 cusecs
- Kotri Barrage: Inflow of 44,666 cusecsm, outflow of 3,165 cusecs
Further, the Flood Forecasting Division (FFD) reported that the Chenab River is currently flowing at medium flood levels, while the Ravi River is at a low flood level. However, reportedly both the rivers are expected to rise to medium or high flood levels within the next 24 hours.
According to the FFD, the Indus River at Kalabagh, Chashma and Taunsa, the Kabul River at Nowshera, the Chenab at Marala and Trimmu, and the Ravi at Balloki and Sidhnai are currently at low flood levels. Additionally, district administrations in Lahore, Gujranwala, Sheikhupura, Sialkot, Narowal and Khanewal have been placed on high alerts. However, authorities continue to monitor the river closely at all major barrages and gauging stations.
Earlier, India once again used water as a weapon by releasing water from the Bhakra Dam after the Salal Dam, raising concerns over possible flooding downstream.
According to media reports, the next 24 hours are considered critical, with a risk of flooding in the Sutlej River.
