Apple is changing how financed iPhones work, closing a long used loophole that allowed customers to buy an unlocked device while paying through selected mobile carriers.
Under the updated policy, customers who finance an iPhone through Verizon or T-Mobile at Apple’s online or retail stores will receive a carrier locked device until it is fully paid off. Previously, these financed iPhones remained unlocked despite being purchased on carrier payment plans.
The change brings Verizon and T-Mobile in line with AT&T, whose financed iPhones have long been locked to its network until the instalment plan is completed.
Apple quietly updated its support information to reflect the new rule. A recently added FAQ explains that iPhones bought directly from Apple are generally unlocked and can be used with any compatible mobile network. However, devices financed through the AT&T Installment Plan, T-Mobile Equipment Installment Plan or Verizon Device Payment Program will stay locked until the balance is cleared.
For many users, an unlocked iPhone offers greater flexibility. It allows them to switch between mobile networks without restrictions and makes it easier to use a local SIM or eSIM while travelling abroad. A locked device, on the other hand, limits customers to the carrier that financed the phone until it is unlocked.
Apple has not explained the reason behind the policy shift. However, industry observers believe the move could help prevent abuse of carrier financing offers. In the past, some buyers reportedly took advantage of trade in deals and promotional discounts to obtain unlocked iPhones, with some devices later being resold before the financing was fully repaid.
Despite the updated support page, Apple’s checkout process still indicates that iPhones financed through Verizon and T-Mobile are unlocked. This suggests the new policy may not yet be fully rolled out across all purchase channels.
The change does not affect customers who buy an iPhone outright or use Apple Card Monthly Installments. Those devices will continue to be unlocked from the moment they are activated. Carrier financed iPhones will become unlocked once they have been paid off in full.
