Forest fire in Kotli Sattian, caused by intense heat, has caused massive destruction to not only wildlife but also damaged huge amount of natural forest.
Satellite images have revealed the scale of destruction caused by a forest fire in Kotli Sattian, triggered by an intense heatwave.
Data released by SUPARCO shows that about 3,037 hectares of natural forest have been burnt at 25 locations in the ecologically sensitive region.
A comparison of satellite images taken between May 9 and May 29, 2026, highlights heavy losses in Chir pine forests. These forests play a key role in sub-watersheds linked to the Indus and Jhelum basins.
Experts say the damage goes beyond the burnt areas. The fire has disrupted the breeding season of birds and wildlife and destroyed young plants and saplings.
They warn that the affected land is now vulnerable to invasive, fire-resistant vegetation, which may further harm the ecosystem.
Officials say the blaze has been controlled in some areas with help from local communities and forest staff. However, fires are still active on nearby slopes, with strong and hot winds aiding their spread.
