Punjab has introduced an initiative for women who use the Lahore Metro Bus Service by launching buses exclusively for female passengers. This provides women with a safer and more comfortable travel experience during busy commuting hours.
According to the Transport and Mass Transit Department, five buses have been allocated for women on the Metro Bus Service. Five Speedo buses have been temporarily shifted to operate on the Metro Bus track, allowing women to benefit from dedicated transport facilities without delay.
Punjab Minister for Transport Bilal Akbar Khan said the decision was taken to protect women from harassment during peak travel hours and to ensure they can commute in a secure environment. He explained that the additional buses were introduced in response to the growing number of female passengers and the need to reduce overcrowding in buses.
The minister stated that the initiative has been launched on the instructions of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, who has directed authorities to prioritise women’s safety while travelling on public transport.
Bilal Akbar Khan further said the government is planning to expand these facilities to ensure long-term improvements in women’s public transport services across Lahore.
On the other hand, previously the Lahore Traffic Police established a new scooty driving school for women at Liberty Market in Lahore. The driving school is part of the Punjab government’s Women on Wheels initiative.
It has been launched to boost the confidence of young women by providing them with professional training for scooty driving.
On the occasion, the Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Lahore Syed Abdul Raheem Shirazi stated that the school will follow a women to women service model and include female instructors to guide young women in a safe environment. The CTO stated that Lahore Traffic Police has trained over 7,000 women in driving cars and riding scooters.
