Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has reportedly dismissed Jhang Deputy Commissioner Babar Sahib Din as the allegations of the misuse of government vehicles for political protocol have come on the surface.

The controversy began after a video was shared on social media which appeared to show the official government vehicles giving protocol to the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) MPA Saqib Khan Chadhar.

The video has been a cause for public discussion of the employment of government resources, and if government mechanisms were used to assist a political figure.

The development led to action against the deputy commissioner of Jhang, reports said, but with officials’ details regarding the context of his reported removal not immediately available.

The incident has started a discussion on social media regarding government vehicles, the tasks of district administration officials and the accountability of public officials.

Government vehicles and other government facilities are for administrative purposes and for official government duties.

Their use for other purposes than that of the approved procedures may lead to concerns about transparency, responsible use of public funds and equal treatment under administrative laws.

The deputy commander’s ousting has brought the issue of the role of district administration officials in the use of the government’s resources to the fore.

It has also cast doubt on the system by which official protocol is handled for elected representatives and how it can be prevented that state facilities could be abused.

The claims about the viral video, however, have yet to be independently substantiated. The Punjab government or the authorities would require further clarification to understand the exact incident.

The episode coincides with growing public demand for transparency and accountability in the public sector, and the video has further fueled a growing sense of impunity among those who are using official resources for their political agendas in Punjab.
