Authorities have launched a crackdown on ghost employees in Mardan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, who receive salaries from the government treasury without performing their assigned duties in their respective departments. Lists are being prepared of employees posted in various government institutions who are working for members of the provincial assembly or serving at other locations instead of fulfilling their official responsibilities.
According to sources, the district administration has accelerated efforts to identify ghost employees, while the scope of action against government workers drawing salaries without performing their designated duties is being expanded. In this regard, records and details are being collected from various departments to verify employees’ actual postings and the nature of their responsibilities.
Sources said that seven employees of the Education Department have been dismissed following an inquiry, while action has been initiated against another seven employees. Disciplinary proceedings will also be taken against the latter in accordance with government rules.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Commissioner of Mardan has sought lists of suspected ghost employees from the Health Department. Following this move, the department’s records will also be examined to identify employees who remain absent from their official duties or work elsewhere instead of performing their assigned responsibilities.
According to sources, the Commissioner of Mardan Division has also made it clear that action will be taken against all government employees who draw salaries from public funds but fail to perform their designated duties. Further measures will be taken based on lists and records received from different departments.
The preparation of employee lists to verify official postings and attendance is being considered an important part of the ongoing district-level crackdown. After the Education Department, records of the Health Department and other government institutions will also be scrutinised to identify employees against whom complaints or reports of irregularities have been received.
Sources said the objective of the operation is to ensure attendance and proper performance of duties in government departments and make all public-sector employees accountable for fulfilling their assigned responsibilities in return for salaries paid from the national exchequer.
