Iran's supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei issues key statement on Iran-US agreement

The current supreme leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Mojtaba Khamenei, has issued an important statement on the agreement between Iran and the United States (US) on Thursday. The talks between the two countries have been mediated by Pakistan.

In a written message to the people of Iran, Khamenei said that Iranian President Pezeshkian, as head of the Supreme National Security Council, had agreed to make sure that the deal protects Iran’s interests and promised not to give in if the US made excessive demands.

Khamenei also said that any future face-to-face talks with the US would not mean accepting “the enemy’s position.”

“As you are aware, an agreement has been signed between the presidents of Iran and the United States. In reaching this stage, the responsible officials made considerable efforts with sincere intentions and concern for the country’s interests,” it read.

“It was, however, the President of the United States who, out of desperation, employed various forms of pressure and leverage to bring about this outcome,” the message read.

“In principle, I held a different view. Nevertheless, based on the commitment given to me by the respected President, in his capacity as Chairman of the Supreme National Security Council, on behalf of himself and the other members, to safeguard the rights of the Iranian nation and the Resistance Front—and having explicitly accepted responsibility for the matter—I authorised it,” it read further.

“He has also stated explicitly that if the American side seeks excessive demands, they will not submit to them. From this moment onward, we—the proud people of Iran and this humble servant—will be waiting to see whether the stated conditions are fulfilled,” the statement said.

“It is evident, however, that any direct negotiations that may take place in the future should not be interpreted as acceptance of the enemy’s position,” it added.

“We hope that the blessings and prayers of our Master, may God hasten his reappearance, will bring victory, success, and divine assistance to the honourable people of Iran,” it added further.

“Peace, mercy, and blessings of God be upon you,” it concluded.
