Expected Muharram holidays in Pakistan

The expected holidays for Muharram have been announced in Pakistan.

Public holidays are expected to be observed in Pakistan later this month as the country prepares to mark the beginning of the Islamic New Year with the arrival of Muharram.

According to the Islamic date, the first day of Muharram 1448 AH is likely to fall in mid-June, probably on June 16.

However, the exact date will depend on the sighting of the moon and an official announcement by the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee.

If current projections are confirmed, public holidays for the Ashura Day are expected to be observed on June 24 and June 25, corresponding to the 9th and 10th of Muharram.

Traditionally, the federal government announces public holidays on both days to facilitate religious observances and security arrangements across the country.

Many local routes will also be closed to the public due to the processions being held during Muharram.

During the holidays, government offices, educational institutions and many businesses remain closed, while banks and other public sector organisations also suspend routine operations.

Authorities typically introduce additional security measures during Muharram, particularly on Ashura, when religious processions and gatherings take place in cities across Pakistan.

Officials have said the final holiday schedule will be announced after the moon-sighting decision and subsequent notification by the government.

Muharram marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar and holds particular significance for Muslims around the world, with the 10th of Muharram, known as Ashura, observed through religious gatherings, processions and commemorative events.

The month of Muharram is of great grievance, as the Shia community, along with the other sects of the Muslim community, grieves over the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (A.S).
