The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has carried out its first comprehensive search and rescue simulation exercise, which is designed to improve coordinated disaster response mechanisms throughout Pakistan.
The drill was successfully executed at the National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC) located in Islamabad, with a focus on improving an integrated system to address potential hazards and emergencies more efficiently.
As per officials, the exercise was organised in anticipation of monsoon-related risks, particularly flooding.
The NEOC plays a pivotal role in ensuring early preparedness through advanced weather forecasting, satellite data, and timely alerts.
Conducted under the INSAR framework, the simulation saw participation from various agencies and volunteers, including Rescue 1122, civil defense, armed forces, and both federal and provincial institutions.
Floods and earthquakes simulated in NDMA exercise
The exercise simulated several disaster scenarios, such as glacial lake outburst floods (GLOF) in Gilgit-Baltistan, extensive flooding in different regions, and earthquakes in Islamabad and Muzaffarabad.
Officials assessed preparedness, coordination, and response times during the drill, highlighting the significance of effective communication, prompt information sharing, and a unified command system. The critical role of local volunteers in disaster response was also mentioned.
The NDMA chairman highlighted the necessity of ensuring timely dissemination of information to the public and addressing deficiencies in the current response system.
Authorities reiterated that an integrated and efficient system is vital to minimise losses from natural disasters, while reaffirming their commitment to making such exercises a regular component of the national disaster management strategy.
The NEOC will continue to be fortified as a central hub for early warning and risk communication across the nation.
