The Sindh government has issued a notification, informing about the appointment of NED University Vice Chancellor Dr Muhammad Tufail as the acting Vice Chancellor of the University of Karachi in addition to his current responsibilities.
The appointment comes as the four year term of the current University of Karachi Vice Chancellor, Dr Khalid Mahmood Iraqi, is set to end on July 28.
Before completing his regular four year tenure, Dr Iraqi had also served as the university’s acting vice chancellor for three years. This makes him the Vice Chancellor of the university for a total of 7 years.
Karachi University teachers boycott semester exams
Recently, the Karachi University Teachers Association (KUTA) announced a boycott of semester examinations that were scheduled to begin on May 5 at the University of Karachi.
The association said that the teachers would not conduct the exams until their demands were met. The decision put the university’s semester schedule at risk.
According to KUTA, the boycott was announced because of the university administration’s failure to resolve several long standing issues raised by faculty members.
The association also called a general body meeting of university teachers on May 7 at 10 AM to discuss the situation and decide on the next course of action.
In addition, KUTA said it would write to the Sindh Chief Minister. It also requested his intervention and called for greater financial transparency in the university’s affairs.
Before that, the University of Karachi has started a two day weekly on campus class schedule. Under this schedule, on campus classes will be held on Mondays and Thursdays.
The rest of the week will continue online. Morning classes on campus will run from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Evening classes will take place from 3:30 PM to 9:00 PM on the same days.
Dr Siddiqui asked all teaching and non teaching staff to be present on campus during these hours.
University transport will also operate fully on Mondays and Thursdays. MPhil and PhD classes may be held on weekly holidays if departments decide so.
