Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a nationwide monsoon alert until August 5 on Thursday. The authority has warned of heavy rain, flash floods, urban flooding, and landslides in many parts of the country.
Where will it rain in Pakistan?
According to the NDMA, different areas of Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), Balochistan, Punjab, and Sindh are expected to receive rain and heavy showers over the coming days.
It further said that heavy rain and glacier melting could increase water levels in rivers and streams. This may lead to flooding and landslides in some areas.
Gilgit-Baltistan and KP weather
In Gilgit-Baltistan, Hunza, Nagar, Gilgit, Ghizer, Tangir, Darel, Diamer, Ghanche, Shigar, Yasin, Roundu, Skardu, Astore, and Gupis-Yasin may see a sudden rise in river and stream water levels.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, flash floods are possible in mountain streams and seasonal waterways in Chitral, Upper and Lower Dir, Swat, Shangla, Kohistan, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Nowshera, Charsadda, and Mardan.
Additionally, in Swabi, Bannu, Lakki Marwat, Kurram, North and South Waziristan, Tank, Dera Ismail Khan, Bajaur, Mohmand, Khyber, Orakzai, Kohat, Karak, and Hangu.
AJK and Balochistan weather
The NDMA also warned of rising water levels in rivers and streams across AJK. The areas most at risk include Muzaffarabad, Neelum Valley, Bagh, Haveli, Poonch, Sudhnoti, Kotli, Bhimber, Hattian Bala, and Mirpur.
In Balochistan, flash floods may occur in seasonal streams in Zhob, Sherani, Musa Khel, Loralai, Harnai, Sibi, Kohlu, Qila Saifullah, Pishin, Quetta, Mastung, Jhal Magsi, Nasirabad, Awaran, Lasbela, Kalat, and Khuzdar.
Punjab and Sindh weather
Punjab can also receive widespread rainfall. Flash floods may also occur in streams in Sialkot, Narowal, Chakwal, Gujrat, Dera Ghazi Khan, Rajanpur, Murree, and Galiyat.
Urban flooding is also possible in low-lying areas of Lahore, Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Faisalabad, Multan, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sialkot, Narowal, Jhelum, Chakwal, Sargodha, Sahiwal, and Sheikhupura.
In Sindh, urban flooding may affect Hyderabad, Sukkur, Shaheed Benazirabad, Thatta, Badin, Sanghar, Khairpur, Mirpurkhas, Umerkot, Tharparkar, Mithi, Tando Muhammad Khan, and Tando Allahyar.
NDMA issues river flow warning
The NDMA said that medium to high water flow is expected in the Chenab River and its linked rivers. Moderate water flow is also expected in the upper areas of the Jhelum River near Mangla Dam. Water levels can also rise in the Ravi, Kabul, Swat, Panjkora, and other rivers.
