NDMA issues rain, flood alert across Pakistan until July 24

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued an alert for heavy rain, river flooding, flash floods and urban flooding in different parts of Pakistan until July 24.

According to the details given by the NDMA, flooding is possible in rivers in Hunza, Shigar and Ghanche in Gilgit-Baltistan. Additionally, the rivers and streams in Azad Jammu and Kashmir may also overflow. These include the Jhelum, Neelum and Poonch rivers.

Additionally, flooding may also occur in rivers and streams across parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Dera Ghazi Khan, the Soan River, the Pothohar region, and northeastern Balochistan.

The NDMA also warned of high level flooding in the upper parts of the Chenab and Jhelum rivers. There is also a risk of sudden rises in water levels and flash floods.

It also said that if India releases water from its dams, water levels in the Ravi and Sutlej rivers could rise significantly.

There is also a risk of urban flooding in several cities due to heavy rainfall. These include Rawalpindi, Jhelum, Gujranwala, Lahore and Sialkot.

The NDMA has directed local authorities to keep rescue teams and machinery ready to respond to any emergency.

The authority has also issued a landslide and falling rocks alert until July 23 for parts of Chitral and Gilgit-Baltistan.

Islamabad, Rawalpindi receive rain

Yesterday, rain fell in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, lowering temperatures and making the weather pleasant.

The twin cities remained cloudy from the night before as well. Intermittent rain brought relief from the heat.

Earlier, the NDMA had issued a weather alert for several parts of the country. It warned of heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong winds from July 19 to 23 as monsoon activity intensifies.

The authority said monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea have strengthened over upper and central Pakistan. Additionally, a western weather system is expected to increase rainfall in northern areas.
