PM Shehbaz takes notice of sluggish internet speeds nationwide

Despite the 5G spectrum auction, mobile internet speeds in Pakistan have yet to see any major improvement. Taking notice of the issue, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called for a detailed report from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).

In a recent briefing, the PTA chairman informed the Prime Minister that telecom operators are currently importing 4G and 5G equipment to upgrade network infrastructure. The installation process will begin once the equipment arrives, with improvements expected in the coming months.

During the briefing, it was explained that telecom operators are importing 4G and 5G equipment to upgrade their network infrastructure. Once the equipment is received, installation will begin, which is expected to take a few months.

The Chairman stated that improvements in telecom infrastructure will lead to a noticeable increase in internet speeds. In the first phase, 5G services will be launched in Islamabad and the four provincial capitals. Alongside this, 4G internet speeds are also expected to improve significantly.

The Prime Minister directed that high-speed internet must be provided to the public at all costs, emphasising that fast internet is essential for achieving the vision of a Digital Pakistan. He also instructed the PTA to ensure that telecom operators meet their set targets. The Chairman of PTA assured that he would maintain effective oversight and ensure proper regulatory checks and balances.

It is worth mentioning that the Pakistan Airport Authority (PAA) had earlier annonced launching of 5G service at Islamabad International Airport and announced that it is the first airport to offer 5G.

In the issued statement, the PAA confirmed that the authority launched 5G service at the Islamabad International Airport in collaboration with a private telecom company to provide fast internet to the passengers.

“The newly launched 5G services will enhance passengers’ travel experience with high-speed connectivity and advanced digital amenities,” said the PAA statement. Pakistan has recently sold 5G spectrum worth $507million through auction to enhance internet speed.
