PM Shehbaz signs historic Islamabad memorandum of understanding between US and Iran

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has signed the historic Islamabad memorandum of understanding (MOU) between US and Iran.

According to official statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif signed the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) as mediator.

The Islamabad MOU has been signed by President of USA Donald J. Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pazeshkian.

Earlier, Prime Minister (PM), Shehbaz Sharif, officially announced the electronic signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

In his post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Shehbaz Sharif said that I am honoured to announce that the historic ‘Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding’ has been electronically signed today between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran.

PM Shehbaz added, “The Memorandum has been signed by the honourable Presidents of both the countries and also endorsed by me as the mediator. The signing of this agreement at the highest level of the respective governments demonstrates the commitment of both sides to a diplomatic resolution of the conflict.”

Shehbaz Sharif specially mentioned the efforts of the Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) and the Chief of the Defence Forces (CDF), Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, saying that I would also like to make special mention of Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, whose tireless efforts, selfless dedication and instrumental role were critical in facilitating this breakthrough and advancing the cause of peace and regional stability.

He appreciated the wisdom, foresight and statesmanship of the Supreme Leader of Iran, His Eminence Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei, and the Iranian President, Masoud Pezeshkian, in embracing the cause of peace.

While mentioning the Iranian negotiating team, including Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Seyyed Abbas Araghchi and Eskandar Momeni, Shehbaz Sharif said that their patience, perseverance and commitment to constructive engagement were instrumental in bringing this agreement to fruition.

Shehbaz Sharif congratulated the US President, Donald Trump, for his steadfast commitment to diplomacy and preference for peaceful resolution.

He said that Donald Trump has once again helped end a conflict that could have led to devastating consequences for the region and beyond.

By acknowledging the sincere efforts and constructive engagement of the leadership of the State of Qatar in helping reach the Islamabad MoU, PM Shehbaz said, “I also highly commend the leadership of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Republic of Türkiye and the Arab Republic of Egypt for their indispensable role and invaluable contributions in this regard.”
