President Asif Ali Zardari has instructed that all possible measures be taken to reduce loadshedding throughout the nation, as stated in a release from the President’s Secretariat.
The directive was issued during a meeting focused on water resource management at Aiwan-i-Sadr, according to the statement, which also mentioned that the president addressed the energy shortfalls associated with the regional context.
President Zardari further stated that any load management should be carried out strictly in a transparent and declared manner, in line with prior public announcements, so that citizens are fully informed and disruption is reduced.
This directive from the President followed the government’s announcement of over two hours of daily loadshedding during peak hours, aimed at preventing a significant rise in electricity tariffs.
The Power Division indicated its capability to meet the full demand, although this situation has severe effects.
It further stated, “The primary challenge currently arises during peak hours from 5 PM to 1 AM. During this period, demand surges considerably, primarily due to decreased hydel generation. Dependence on costly fuels to satisfy this demand could result in a considerable hike in electricity prices.”
President Zardari discusses India’s weaponisation of water
The President also expressed his concern regarding India’s weaponisation of water by halting the Indus Waters Treaty.
He commented that the attempt to manipulate water as a political instrument is a matter of grave concern.
He highlighted the necessity of protecting Pakistan’s water rights and ensuring that all essential diplomatic and legal actions are undertaken.
In addressing the energy shortfalls related to the regional situation, the President also urged authorities to enhance water conservation initiatives nationwide.
He also called for the immediate execution of rainwater harvesting projects at domestic, commercial, and industrial levels, and instructed that the construction of small dams, recharge wells, and water storage facilities be accelerated.
