Punjab govt to implement Emission Trading System to control smog

The Punjab government has decided to launch a modern Emissions Trading System (ETS) to manage industrial pollution and fight against smog.

This system will include pollution monitoring, emission data collection, and a trading platform in the province.

Authorities state that low-polluting industries will receive financial incentives and benefits, while those with higher emissions will need to buy extra permits. Additional actions, including fines, will be enforced on industries that exceed the set limits.

The government aims to support industries that implement clean and eco-friendly technologies to foster environmental responsibility in the industrial sector.

It is important to note that this model has been created in partnership with the University of Chicago and is based on a top-tier cap and trade system, which sets pollution limits for factories.

Officials believe this initiative will help reduce smog, improve public health, and encourage environmentally friendly industrial practices.

Punjab govt takes measures against industrial pollution

In 2026, the Punjab Government has ramped up its year-round anti-smog efforts, focusing on illegal fat-melting and pyrolysis plants, brick kilns, and high-emission vehicles to reduce toxic air pollution.

The province’s Environment Protection Agency (EPA) is actively closing down non-compliant factories and using smart surveillance, drones, and anti-smog water cannons.

The government has also taken action against hundreds of illegal operations, sealed thousands of polluting factories and brick kilns, and filed thousands of FIRs.

Special squads have been set up to fine and seize smoke-emitting vehicles.
