Summer holidays 2026 in Punjab schools may be extended until September 1 due to heavy monsoon rains and flooding in Punjab, according to reports on Wednesday.
The Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has recommended that schools in flood affected areas should not reopen immediately.
According to the sources, the proposal has been sent to the Punjab School Education Department for final approval. A decision will be made after reviewing the situation.
Punjab schools summer holidays 2026 extended?
If the proposal is accepted, students will be able to enjoy summer vacations 2026 for one additional week, as the previous opening date was announced to be August 24, 2026.
The PDMA said that schools in affected areas should remain closed until floodwaters reduce. The Punjab government has also ordered inspections of schools and other government buildings damaged by the rains.
Fourth spell of monsoon rain
The PDMA said the fourth spell of monsoon rains is expected to continue until August 5. This has further raised the risk of urban flooding, landslides, and rising water levels in rivers and streams.
More rain is expected in Lahore, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Murree, Sheikhupura, Nankana Sahib, Kasur, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, Chiniot, and Sargodha.
The authority has also warned of flooding in low lying urban areas and possible landslides in Murree, Galliyat, and other hilly regions, urging local authorities to remain on high alert.
Recently, the train services between Lahore and Faisalabad were suspended temporarily after heavy rain and flash floods damaged a railway bridge near Qila Sattar Shah.
Pakistan Railways said that the floods damaged railway tracks between Qila Sheikhupura and Masan. This made the route unsafe for trains.
The Karakoram Express (41 Up/42 Down) and Shalimar Express (27 Up/28 Down) will now use an alternative route through Raiwind, Sahiwal and Khanewal instead of the usual Faisalabad route.
