Punjab gives private schools 10 days to offer 10% free education

The Punjab Assembly Standing Committee on Education, on Monday, has directed all private schools in the province to follow the law that requires them to provide free education to 10 per cent of deserving students.

The committee discussed the issue during a meeting that was held today. Members said that many private schools were not following the rule.

Adding that they were not keeping the required quota for children from low income families. The committee ordered all private schools to implement the law within 10 days.

One committee member said the government should not depend only on information provided by schools.

He suggested that the Education Department should directly admit deserving students to private schools to make the process easier and more transparent.

Committee Chairman Malik Nosher Khan Anjam Lungerial directed the Education Department to cancel the licences of schools that do not follow the law within the 10 day deadline.

During the meeting, the Secretary of School Education said that the department would collect information from private schools to check whether they are following the law.

They will also focus on good academic performance, character building, leadership skills, discipline and extracurricular activities for the students.

The new schools will also have modern classrooms, science labs, computer labs, libraries and sports facilities.

According to the details, the government also plans to hire highly qualified teachers. Admissions will be based on merit too.
