President Donald Trump, on Friday, announced that the leaders of Russia and Ukraine have agreed to his proposal for a three-day ceasefire and a prisoner exchange, stating that this cessation of hostilities could signify the “beginning of the end” of the prolonged conflict between the two nations.
Trump shared the news via social media, indicating that the ceasefire would be effective from Saturday to Monday.
Notably, Saturday marks Victory Day in Russia, a significant holiday that honors its triumph over Nazi Germany 81 years ago during World War II.
In view of the situation, the US President stated, “I am pleased to announce that there will be a THREE DAY CEASEFIRE (May 9th, 10th, and 11th) in the War between Russia and Ukraine.”
“The Celebration in Russia is for Victory Day but, likewise, in Ukraine, because they were also a big part and factor of World War II”, he added.
Russia approves prisoner exchange with Ukraine
Ukrainian President Zelensky stated that a ceasefire “must be established” and confirmed that Kyiv has received Moscow’s approval for a major prisoner exchange.
Trump also specified that the ceasefire includes a halt to all military actions and the exchange of 1,000 prisoners from each side.
“This request was made directly by me, and I greatly appreciate the agreement from President Vladimir Putin and President Volodymyr Zelensky, Hopefully, this marks the beginning of the end of a very long, deadly, and hard-fought war”, he continued.
Trump further noted that discussions are ongoing regarding the conclusion of the war, stating, “and we are getting closer and closer every day.”
