SC acquits main accused in Baldia factory fire case, sets aside death penalty

The Supreme Court of Pakistan has acquitted the main accused in the Baldia Town factory tragedy case, including Rehman Bhola and Zubair Charia, overturning their death sentences.

According to details, the Supreme Court’s Karachi Registry issued a significant verdict on the appeals filed by the two accused, setting aside their death sentences and ordering their acquittal.

During the proceedings, Barrister Farogh Naseem and Advocate Hassan Sabir appeared before the court on behalf of the MQM. The defence argued that the prosecution had failed to provide concrete evidence or any eyewitness testimony proving that the accused had set fire to the factory.

After hearing the arguments and reviewing the available evidence, the court accepted the appeals and acquitted both men.

It is worth noting that a lower court had previously convicted Rehman Bhola and Zubair Charia and sentenced them to death. The accused subsequently challenged the verdict before the Supreme Court.

The Baldia Town factory fire occurred in September 2012 at a garment factory in Karachi’s Baldia Town area. The tragedy claimed the lives of 256 workers and employees, making it one of the deadliest industrial disasters in Pakistan’s history.
