US Officials revealed on Tuesday that an image of Donald Trump will soon appear in some passports.
Donald Trump has once again shattered another norm as he aggressively puts his stamp on government institutions.
What’s interesting about this development is that there are very few examples in the world where such things have happened.
Donald Trump is going to be the first sitting US President to be featured in American travel documents.
According to the State Department the passport will be a limited edition and will be offered to mark the country’s 250th anniversary of the US declaration of Independence.
The department has been historically viewed as outside of US partisan politics. However, it posted on social media a sample of the passport.
In the passport a stern looking Trump was superimposed over the Declaration of July 4, 1776.
The signature of Trump will be underneath the image in gold.
There will also be a second limited edition passport which will have a historic painting of the US Founding Fathers.
Tommy Pigott the State Department spokesperson said that, “As the United States celebrates America’s 250th anniversary in July, the State Department is preparing to release a limited number of specially designed US passports to commemorate this historic occasion.”
The Trump-themed passports would be available at in-person appointments in Washington for as long as there is availability according to another department official. He spoke on the condition of anonymity.
He also assured that there will be no additional costs for the passports.
Whether or not passport applicants could refuse Trump picture is not clear yet. However, majority of Americans who will be seeking passports through local post offices will receive the normal passports.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio has been criticised by US Lawmakers over the passport initiative.
