Speaker of the People’s Majlis of the Maldives, Abdul Raheem Abdullah, met Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir at General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi.
Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) has posted the picture, saying that “During the meeting, matters of mutual interest, including regional security and bilateral cooperation, were discussed. COAS & CDF Syed Asim Munir underscored the importance Pakistan attaches to its brotherly relations with the Maldives and reaffirmed commitment to further strengthening these ties for the mutual benefit of both countries.”
“H.E. Abdul Raheem Abdullah appreciated Pakistan’s constructive role in promoting regional peace and stability and expressed his desire to deepen bilateral engagement and expand cooperation in areas of mutual interest”, the statement by ISPR added.
The Maldives has an officially 100 per cent Muslim citizen population. Pakistan and the Maldives share long-standing, friendly and cordial diplomatic relations, established in 1966. The relationship is based on mutual respect, trust, a shared Islamic faith and common cultural heritage.
Both nations routinely engage in high-level diplomatic talks, parliamentary exchanges, and cooperation in international forums like the United Nations and SAARC.
The Maldives is a premier tropical island destination in the Indian Ocean, known for its luxury overwater bungalows, crystal-clear lagoons and vibrant coral reefs. Tourism directly and indirectly accounts for roughly 28 to 70 per cent of the nation’s total Gross Domestic Product (GDP), depending on whether direct contributions or broader multiplier effects are considered.
