K-Electric tariff case: High Court suspends NEPRA orders

The Sindh High Court has suspended disputed orders and notifications linked to K-Electric’s Multi-Year Tariff (MYT) for FY2024 to FY2030.
The court issued the interim order on October 7, 2026. It also issued notices to the respondents and fixed the case for further hearing. K-Electric confirmed the development in a statement on October 8.

Why did K-Electric approach the court?

K-Electric challenged the September 23, 2026 judgment of the NEPRA Appellate Tribunal.
The company also challenged NEPRA’s review decisions issued on October 20, 2025. It also raised objections to later notifications issued by NEPRA and the Ministry of Energy’s Power Division.
K-Electric said NEPRA can review a tariff decision. However, it argued that a review should not become a new tariff decision.
The company said the review decisions had a major impact on its FY2024 to FY2030 tariff plan. It also said the changes could make the tariff system financially difficult to maintain.

What happened to K-Electric’s tariff?

NEPRA had reduced K-Electric’s average base tariff from Rs39.97 to Rs32.37 per unit.
This was a reduction of Rs7.60 per unit. It was around 19 per cent. The revised tariff was set for seven years from FY2024 to FY2030.
The decision was also expected to reduce the government’s subsidy burden by nearly Rs200 billion.

What did the Sindh High Court decide?

The High Court said the points raised by K-Electric needed to be considered.
The court therefore suspended the challenged orders and notifications on an interim basis. The case will now be heard further by the court.
K-Electric said it will continue to pursue the matter before the relevant legal and regulatory forums.
The company also said it remains committed to a fair and sustainable tariff system. It said it will also work to protect consumers and maintain the long-term reliability of Karachi’s power system.
