ATC sends Group Captain Asim Tariq murder suspect Saad to jail on 14-day remand

In the high-profile murder case of senior Pakistan Air Force Officer Group Captain Asim Tariq in Islamabad, the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) has sent the prime suspect, Saad Abbasi, to jail on a 14-day judicial remand for an identification parade. The court also directed the police to complete the identification process at the earliest.

According to details, ATC Judge Abul Hasnat Zulqarnain heard the case in Islamabad. The police produced the accused, Saad Abbasi, before the court under tight security.

Accepting the prosecution’s request, the court ordered that the suspect be sent to jail for 14 days to facilitate the identification parade and directed the investigating authorities to produce him before the court again on July 20, 2026.

Under legal procedure, the accused’s face was covered during his court appearance to ensure that witnesses could identify him through a formal identification parade. As per the court’s order, the eyewitnesses named in the FIR will now participate in the identification parade inside the jail under the supervision of a magistrate.

Police said that after allegedly killing of martyred Group Captain Asim Tariq, the suspect attempted to flee Islamabad and evade arrest by changing his appearance. However, Islamabad Police arrested him within nine hours of the incident outside a medical store with the help of Safe City cameras and other modern surveillance technology.

It is worth mentioning here that Inspector General (IG) Islamabad Police Ali Nasir Rizvi on Sunday confirmed the arrest of Saad Abbasi, the prime suspect in the murder of Group Captain Asim Tariq Shaheed.

Addressing a press conference, the IG said Islamabad Police arrested the suspect within nine hours of the incident through swift action and the use of modern investigative techniques.

He said the murder was treated as a top priority, with investigators launching an immediate probe after the incident. Rizvi said the swift investigation led to the arrest of the suspect within hours, reaffirming the police’s commitment to ensuring those responsible are brought to justice.

The IG stated that the accused, Muhammad Saad Abbasi, and a woman named Nimra had both worked at a cash-and-carry store in Melody. According to the investigation, they had met twice before. On the day of the incident, the accused wanted to take the woman to a park or another location. When she refused, he attempted to force her to go with him.

The IG said that martyred Group Captain Asim Tariq witnessed the situation, turned his car around, parked it, and intervened to stop the accused. The woman then moved toward the Group Captain’s car. At that point, the accused, who was riding a motorcycle, turned back and opened fire on the Group Captain with a pistol.
