Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said in a message on X that Pakistan’s right to water under the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) is inalienable and described it as the country’s lifeline, which it will fully protect.
He stated that India’s unilateral move to place the IWT in abeyance has “no legal or moral standing,” adding that the action has resulted in nothing but diplomatic embarrassment for New Delhi.
Tarar further termed the development a violation of the United Nations-endorsed “One Water–One Vision” principle, reiterating Pakistan’s position that the treaty must be upheld in full.
On the other hand, Mian Muhammad Ayub, Vice President of the Pakistan People’s Party Central Punjab, has stated that India’s attempt to unilaterally suspend the Indus Waters Treaty is a serious, irresponsible, and blatant violation of international law and agreements.
He said Pakistan considers this move a direct threat to its national security, sovereignty, and survival. He further made it clear that Pakistan will take all possible legal, diplomatic, political, and national measures to protect its water resources, its people, sovereignty, national interests, and future.
While talking with a government news agency emphasized that the Indus Waters Treaty is not a favor granted by one country to another, but a globally recognized legal and respected international agreement, also guaranteed by international institutions.
