20 new computers have reportedly gone missing from the Custom House in Karachi. The Deputy Collector Customs Enforcement has been informed about the incident through official correspondence.
Authorities are now investigating how the computers disappeared from the government facility.
Sources said the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) had provided 20 new computers to the Customs Appraisement East department.
The computers were reportedly delivered on August 25 and kept in a storeroom at the Custom House. However, when officials later checked the room, all 20 computers were found missing. The boxes in which the computers had been packed were reportedly left empty inside the storeroom.
What did the CCTV footage reveal?
The initial investigation found CCTV footage from the night of August 13. The footage appeared to show two people leaving the Custom House through the main gate while carrying computer items.
The report said Customs Appraisement East official Arif Shah was allegedly present near the central gate when motorcycles were leaving the premises.
The footage reportedly showed him talking to people who were taking the computers outside. Authorities are now examining his alleged presence and role as part of the investigation.
Sources further claimed that three staff members, identified as Laiq Ahmed, Imran and Junaid Ali Shah, were posted on guard duty at the central gate on the night concerned.
The CCTV footage reportedly showed all three guard rooms at the time when the computers were being taken out.
Investigation ordered
The incident has raised serious questions about security arrangements at the Karachi Custom House. Investigators are expected to determine how such equipment could allegedly go missing from a government building without being stopped at the main gate.
Authorities are figuring out the matter of the computers, how they were able to leave the premises, and whether any officials failed to perform their security duties.
